Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers! Take a look at our frequently asked questions to see what’s what at Jobscan. If you don’t see your answer here, please feel free to contact us.
We also have a ton of great job search resources on the Jobscan blog and in our Learning Center to answer job search and resume optimization questions.

Is Jobscan’s algorithm based off of real Applicant Tracking Systems?
Yes. There are more than 300 ATS vendors in the marketplace, and we have identified the commonalities among the top ATS used by Fortune 500 companies such as Taleo, iCIMs, Jobvite, and more. The common denominators among ATS are keyword searches, keyword frequency, keyword ratios, exact-match keywords, resume content parsing, and match rate. We continue to fine tune Jobscan with similar algorithms on a regular basis.

You can learn more about ATS work at the Learning Center.
What is a scan?
A scan is any comparison of your resume versus a job description using Jobscan. You can view your scan history to see previous results, rescan an older scan, and track your interview progress.
How are scans deducted from my free account?
Any time that you scan your resume against a job description, it counts as a scan. This includes after you edit your resume and "rescan" to see an updated match report. Each of these "rescans" counts as an additional scan in your account. You can earn more free scans with our Jobscan Rewards program.
What match rate should I aim for?
80% is a good match rate to increase your interview chances. The higher the better!
How is the resume match rate calculated?
Your match rate is based on your hard skills, education level (when an advanced degree is included in the job description), job title, soft skills, and other keywords. Resume word count and measurable results are not factored into the match rate.

Please see the Jobscan tutorial for a more complete breakdown of our match rate. If you have additional questions about our algorithms, please reach out to [email protected].
How can I increase my resume match rate?
To increase your match rate, focus your efforts on the hard skills section and match the frequency indicated in our match rate, as high frequency skills are the most impactful. Don’t feel like you need to include every single skill on your resume. Job title is also a high impact factor in the match rate. If you had a similar position in the past with a different title, change the job title in your work experience to the one you are applying for. If you haven’t had similar job titles before, you can include it in the summary statement. Lastly, focus your efforts on soft skills and other keywords.

Why do I need to enter the company name and job description URL for ATS Tips, if it’s already on the pasted job description?
Manually adding the company name and job description URL helps identify the exact ATS this company uses. With this, we can provide you with resume optimization tips specific to that ATS. Please see the Jobscan tutorial to learn more.
How do I upload or paste my resume and job description to scan?
Check out the Jobscan tutorial for instructions and videos on how to use Jobscan.
Why can’t I upload my resume to scan?
For best performance, please make sure your resume is in .DOCX or .PDF format. Additionally, Jobscan is unable to recognize resumes that have been scanned from a hard copy.

If you’re still having upload issues, please reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat.
Why can’t I perform a resume scan?
Make sure that the job description you pasted is complete. Jobscan can’t parse job descriptions without enough information. To paste the job description, copy everything from the job title down through the end of the qualifications and requirements, and exclude the "about the company" section.

If you’re still having upload issues, please reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat.
What's the difference between hard skills, soft skills, and keywords, and why does it matter?
Hard skills are skills learned through training or hands-on experience and include proficiency with specific software, tools, or other specialized skills. Soft skills are skills that don’t necessarily require training, such as "detail oriented" or "team player."

Hard skills are what recruiters are most likely to be searching for, where soft skills are hard to quantify and are less likely to be searched by a recruiter.

Keywords are words that appear frequently in the job description, but are not currently classified as skills. They’re company “buzzwords” you can incorporate into your resume, cover letter, or during your interview.

Learn more about skills and why they matter on the Jobscan blog.
Why do my results say I’m missing skills when they’re already on my resume?
We usually see this problem when the skills on the resume and job description don’t match exactly. This means you may have used a plural (manage vs manages), a verb tense (manage vs managed), or a word variation (manage projects vs project management).

Most ATS don’t understand variations. Because of this, we recommend keywords match exactly with how they’re written in the job description. To learn more, check out our article about wordsmithing your resume on the Jobscan blog.

If you’ve already checked that there are no skill variations and you’re still having an issue, please contact [email protected] or Live Chat.
How can I delete my scan history or uploaded resumes?
You can archive your scans to remove them from your scan history. Access your scan history and click the trash can icon at the upper right corner of the scan you wish to remove.

If you would like your entire profile and account information deleted including resume scans and scan history, please reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat.
Are cover letters scanned by ATS?
We’ve encountered few ATS that search for keywords within cover letters. Basically, if an application is asking for a cover letter, they’re likely to scan it through ATS. You can read more about cover letters in our Learning Center.
How do I scan a cover letter with Jobscan?
You can scan a cover letter with the Jobscan Premium plan. After running a resume scan, locate the Cover Letter portal next to the Resume tab in the Match Report. Click “Add Cover Letter and Rescan” to run a cover letter scan. See the cover letter scan feature in action in our Premium Features tutorial video.
How does the Job Matcher work?
The Job Matcher works by comparing your skills with the skills needed for job openings in your area. We source these jobs through Indeed’s API. You can learn more by watching our Job Matcher tutorial video.
Is my resume shared with recruiters?
No. We are not currently sharing any data with recruiters. The "make my resume searchable to recruiters" checkbox on the homepage is to grant us permission to potentially share your resume with recruiters in the future. We will let you know via email in advance of making this change. You can always uncheck the box if you change your mind.
Can I use Jobscan in a language other than English?
Right now we don’t offer Jobscan in languages other than English, but this is a feature we hope to offer in the future.

How do I change the email address associated with my account?
Check to see if your email address has already been verified on your profile page. If it has and you need to change your email address, please reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat.
How do I reset my password?
You can reset your password on our Password Reset Page. If you don’t receive a reset email from [email protected], please check your spam or promotions folders.
When do I get my free monthly scans?
Make sure your email is verified and you have selected our Free Membership plan. You can check this in your account settings page. The additional scans will be deposited monthly on the day of the month you joined. For example, if you joined on May 20th, you would receive the additional scans on June 20th, July 20th, and so on. Your free scans will be added each month until you hit a cap of 5 unused scans. Use your scans each month to get additional scans.
I signed up for Jobscan Premium, so why doesn’t my account show the plan?
This can happen if you’ve changed your primary email address in LinkedIn after having signed up for Jobscan through LinkedIn. To access Jobscan Premium, reset your password, after which you can use the email address and password login. Alternatively, you can revert your primary LinkedIn email address, or reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat.

This can also happen if you have a second email address that is associated with a free plan. You can find your Premium account login information in your initial sign up email or reach out to [email protected] or Live Chat for help.
I signed up for Jobscan Premium, so why can’t I use the full version of LinkedIn Optimization?
Limited LinkedIn Optimization is offered during the 30-day free trial included with Jobscan Premium Quarterly. Unlimited LinkedIn Optimization is available after the 30-day free trial period or if you choose to opt out of the free trial period when you perform a full LinkedIn scan. If you do opt out, you will be charged for the full Jobscan Premium Quarterly plan immediately.
How do I cancel my account?
Instructions for canceling your account are at the bottom of your account details page. If you paid with a credit card, there will be a button to cancel. If you paid with PayPal, please contact [email protected] to cancel your account.
I meant to cancel my account but forgot before I was charged. Can I get a refund?
Please see Jobscan’s Cancellation and Refund Policy for instructions on how to request a refund.
Can I cancel within my free trial and not get charged?
Yes. You will not be charged if you cancel your plan within the trial period - please note that the trial period is only available with the Jobscan Premium account under the limited version trial period (not for all Premium accounts or LinkedIn Optimization).

After cancellation, your account will be downgraded to the Jobscan Free plan. If you forgot to cancel within your period, please refer to our Cancellation and Refund Policy.
I didn’t pay in USD. Will this affect my refund?
All plan costs are in USD. Currency conversion rates fluctuate on a daily basis. The rate used when a payment is converted from USD may differ from the rate used when a refund is issued.
Why was I charged during my free trial?
When you start your free trial, Jobscan will place a temporary authorization hold on your card for the recurring price of the selected plan. This is done to make sure your payment method is valid and can be successfully charged in the future once your free trial is over. This authorization hold is temporary and should be removed within 7-10 days.
