Jack Miller, a fashion industry professional with a background in luxury retail, faced a challenging job search after his role at Fashionphile, a luxury resale company, ended.
His journey in fashion began at a holiday pop-up at Nordstrom. It later progressed to internships and jobs in luxury resale with The RealReal and, finally, Fashionphile.
“My whole life I was like, I know I want to be in the fashion industry… It’s something that I always wanted to do,” Jack explained. He had his hand in every part of the industry including hands-on responsibilities in customer service, sales, and visual merchandising, where he built expertise in luxury retail and customer relationship management.
After leaving Fashionphile, he had no other fashion job lined up and was unemployed for three months. “After a month and a half without a job, you get to this point where you’re like… I’ve done everything I wanted to do in my ‘funemployment’ era… and now I take it more seriously.”
Once he started putting effort into his resume, his active job search was only a month and a half long. Compared to the average job search of three to six months, Jack came out way ahead by using Jobscan.
Initial job search struggles
Jack initially struggled to get responses with his existing resume, which he admits was outdated and not optimized for current job market standards.
“I was sending out my old resume before I optimized it—before I used any tools or anything. And I didn’t really have a good cover letter, to be honest. So there were some applications I was putting in for, and I was lazy.”
Jack mused, “I think this is how most people are, right? You get a job, put on your resume, and type up what you did at that job, right? And then you get the next job, and just add it on. And so I feel like my resume was up to date, technically.”
And he’s right. Many people, including Jack, created a chronological resume of all their jobs and responsibilities. But those aren’t the impactful resumes of the modern job market.
After recognizing that the copy/paste approach to resumes wasn’t working, he took a deep look at his strategy—or lack thereof—and used Jobscan to find what was holding him back.
Jobscan brings Jack’s resume into the 21st century
Jack uploaded his resume to Jobscan’s resume scanner, which provided insights into the current industry language and highlighted areas where he could update his terminology. For example, it suggested changing “meeting sales goals” to “exceeding targets,” a phrase more aligned with what recruiters want to see.
It showed him that he didn’t need a resume overhaul, but the small details made a huge impact.
“Even that one little simple word,” Jack explained, “It’s showing that you can go above and beyond and can exceed the target versus meet the goal.”
Jobscan helped Jack tailor his resume with the right keywords, making it more attractive to recruiters and ATS-friendly. The resume scanner identified outdated language on his resume and recommended modern terms that would better match job descriptions. This included updates like using “omnichannel communication” instead of listing “phone, email, chat.”
Jack explained that “using Jobscan really helped because it showed me those words that I need to use and things that are going to be picked up in the [applicant tracking system].”
The cover letter generator helped him craft a more personalized and compelling application for each job, improving his response rate from potential employers.
According to Jack, “I think that [my resume] was not really showing the 2024 skills and 2024 verbiage it needed to.”
Jobscan helped pull his resume into the 21st century and stand out as a competitive candidate.
Getting the job offer of his dreams
After using Jobscan to optimize his resume and cover letter, Jack saw a big increase in responses. He advanced to later interview stages and received offers in a short time.
And the result? Jack ultimately accepted a role at Goyard, a prestigious French luxury goods company.
“It’s a company where we have six stores… and I work at our New York flagship doing retail sales. It’s what I would call a dream opportunity for this point in my life.”
