I read resumes all the time as a physician — from technologists, nurses, physician assistants, and even administrative candidates. The truth is, most of us don’t read them line by line. We scan them.
Not because we don’t care, but because time is limited. In medicine, decisions pile up by the minute — patients, procedures, follow-ups. So when a resume lands in front of me, I’m looking for clarity, not cleverness.
That’s the first truth about resume writing: you’re not writing for someone reading carefully; you’re writing for someone skimming with purpose.
1. Make your key points impossible to miss
Most hiring managers spend less than 30 seconds on an initial pass. That means your most critical points — your certifications, years of experience, and unique contributions — should jump off the page.
Bullet points should be short and measurable. Instead of:
“Responsible for managing imaging operations and patient coordination.”
Say:
“Led daily imaging workflow for 100+ patients, improving throughput by 20%.”
I notice numbers, not adjectives. So will your next reader.
2. Write for tired eyes
When you’re reviewing dozens of resumes at 10 p.m., layout matters. Use white space. Avoid dense paragraphs. Choose clean fonts.
I’ve seen incredible candidates hide behind walls of text. Good design isn’t about decoration — it’s about readability.
If your resume looks visually effortless, it signals professionalism before I even read the first word.
3. Lead with relevance, not chronology
A mistake I see often is listing every job in order — even the unrelated ones — as if the goal is to show loyalty over logic.
Instead, lead with what’s most relevant to the role you’re applying for. Highlight clinical or technical skills that connect directly to the position.
You can always summarize older or unrelated experience at the bottom under “Additional Roles.” That’s enough to show history without cluttering the main story.
4. Tell me something I’ll remember
In medicine, we meet a lot of competent people. What stands out is character — and that comes through in small, memorable details.
A short line about a project you initiated, a mentorship role, or a volunteer effort tells me more about you than another generic “team player” line ever will.
One resume I still remember included a single sentence at the end:
“In my free time, I design adaptive devices for disabled athletes.”
That line told me everything I needed to know about their creativity and empathy. They got the interview.
5. Respect the reader’s attention
I’ve seen resumes packed with 10-point font, every inch filled like a legal document. It tells me one thing: this person hasn’t thought about their reader.
The best resumes respect the reader’s time. They say, “I know you’re busy — here’s what matters.”
If you can make someone’s job easier — even in the way you present your experience — you’ve already demonstrated professional awareness.
6. Proofread like your career depends on it (because it does)
Typos happen. But if I catch more than one, it makes me pause. Precision matters — especially in fields like medicine, tech, or finance where details can have real consequences.
Read your resume out loud. You’ll hear mistakes your eyes skip over.
Final thoughts
The goal of your resume isn’t to impress everyone — it’s to communicate clearly with the person who has limited time to decide.
I tell my trainees this often: when someone skims your resume, what you highlight becomes your identity. So make it memorable, clean, and honest.
You don’t need fancy design or gimmicks — you just need clarity and intention. In a pile of noise, that’s what always stands out.
